How to Prepare for Your Weight Loss Journey

Hopefully you enjoyed your holidays! I sure did and it was very cool to get through the holidays while sustaining my LeanMD (LMD) weight loss. This was the first Christmas that I felt strong and empowered when making eating and drinking choices. I have learned so much on my LeanMD journey.

To kick off the 2015 I decided it would be very helpful to hear from a LMD weight-loss expert! I sat down with Jennifer, my LeanMD Mentor and asked her a few questions that I had when I began my weight loss program and here’s what she said:

Each person is different, but with LMD we give our patients every medical tool available to them to help curb their appetite and to optimize their metabolism. Additionally, we recommend eating primarily real and unprocessed foods such as lean proteins which are more satiating then processed carbs. Most patients say that they feel satisfied after the first few days of the program.

2) How long will the program take and how much weight will I lose each week? The length of the weight loss phase will depend on how much weight each person needs to lose (determined at an initial metabolic consultation) and can be impacted by other factors such as medications. Typically the average duration on the weight loss phase of LMD is anywhere from 2 to 12 months and average weight loss is pretty quick at approximately 10 to 15 lbs during the first month and about 2 to 4 lbs lost each week.

3) What kinds of foods will I be eating? LMD was developed to keep meal planning as simple as possible and is based on a formula of eating 3 meals and 2 snacks per day consisting of proteins, fruits and vegetables. Proteins are essential to weight loss and they help you feel satisfied. Non-starchy vegetables help to keep your diet interesting and some are very low in carbohydrates, so you can eat almost an unlimited amount. Fruit is delicious but contains more carbohydrates so quantities are limited.

4) Will I need to exercise? During the first two weeks of the program you may feel a bit tired or lethargic, so you can take it easy and keep activity very light. During week three, it is recommended that you add light activity back in and then slowly increase duration and intensity over time. It is important to commit to some form of activity such as a short walk, every single day to reap the benefits.

5) What do I need to do to prepare myself, my home and my workplace for my new LMD weight loss program?

LMD was created to be simple and easy to follow, so we recommend that you do these things to help with your success at losing weight:

  • Clean out your refrigerator and cabinets
  • Make sure you have a portable water bottle
  • Find a LeanMD a buddy eg; a friend or loved one who wants to join you on a weight loss journey
  • Schedule and keep your virtual or in-person LeanMD appointments
  • Plan and shop for all your meal and snacks once a week
  • Stash LMD-friendly emergency meal or snack items at home, in the car and at work
  • Set goals and stick to them
