How to Set SMART Weight Loss Goals

So many people want to lose weight, but they struggle to create parameters that help them reach their goals. Do things differently this time around by setting SMART weight loss goals – ones that are Specific, Measurable, Accountable, Realistic and have a Timeframe.

Here’s how to set weight loss goals you’ll actually achieve this summer.

Be Specific

Your ultimate goal may be to lose weight, but that’s not specific enough. This part of goal setting involves defining how you will achieve your objective.

For example:

  • “I will wake up 30 minutes early every morning to exercise.”
  • “I will take the stairs at work each day.”
  • “I will eat salads for lunch at least three times a week.”
  • “I will brush my teeth after dinner so I’m not tempted to eat dessert.”

These specific goals give you things to do each day that help you work toward your ultimate weight loss goal.

Make Your Goals Measurable

Decide how many pounds or inches you want to lose, or what pants size you want to fit into. Perhaps your objective is to fit into a cute new swimsuit you bought recently. These kinds of goals are measurable and give you something to work toward.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Track your weight loss once a week to motivate yourself with the progress you’ve already made. Be sure to keep a food journal as well, whether on paper or online, to hold yourself accountable for everything you eat.

Be Realistic

When your goals are reasonable, you’re more likely to stick with them rather than getting discouraged. Is it possible to drop 10 pounds in a month or lose enough weight to fit into your high school prom dress? Maybe not. But is it realistic to lose 5 to 10 percent of your total body weight before the end of the year? Absolutely!

Set a Timeframe

Do you have a big event coming up? Use this as a timetable for reaching your weight loss goals. If you want to lose 20 pounds, you should give yourself three to four months to accomplish this goal. Then, break this down into bite-size milestones you can keep track of, such as losing a healthy one-half to one pound per week.
