Why We Love February

If you are like me, you might be frustrated at all the Valentine’s Day candy that was on display by January 2 nd at the supermarket, drugstore and many big box retailers. Whether you are following the LeanMD Loss, Transition or Sustainable phase this constant sea of chocolate can make things a bit challenging.

However, what you may not know is that there are some good things about chocolate and as long as you are exercising caution and moderation, you may be able to sneak some in as a treat this Valentine’s Day.

Sustainable Weight Loss in CaliforniaHere are some surprising facts that you may not know about chocolate:

  • Chocolate is made from the plant-based cocoa bean that is rich in nutrients called polyphenols that work as antioxidants and help protect the cardiovascular system
  • Chocolate is actually bitter in it’s purest form which is why candy-bar companies add fats and sweeteners such as butter and sugar to make it taste good
  • Dark chocolate is less processed and a healthier option than milk chocolate which loses some of the polyphenols during processing.
  • A one ounce serving of high quality dark chocolate (at least 70 percent cacao) can be very satisfying

Here are some chocolate-related tips for LeanMD clients:

  • Try the yummy LeanMD Chocolate Shake – it really takes the edge off and can fulfill your desire for chocolate.
  • A sweet treat option is the new LeanMD Healthy Chocolate made with Xylitol instead of sugar that has only 39 calories.
  • For an ice cream substitute - my LeanMD mentor told me that some clients freeze the LeanMD Shake in a bowl and it becomes the consistency of ice cream…delicious
  • Exercise first - if you are going to indulge in some chocolate, be sure and get in your daily exercise and count the chocolate as your snack
  • If you want to impress your sweetie with a yummy dessert to share, get a basket of gorgeous fresh large-sized strawberries (in season now) and dip them in one ounce of melted dark chocolate
  • Try a faux hot chocolate made with unsweetened cocoa powder, stevia and warmed almond milk

Remember that February is a time to celebrate love and friendship so try to focus on non-food related activities like watching a romantic movie, attending a jazz concert or writing your significant other a love letter!
